The Long Winter Book Discussion

During my many readings of the Little House books during my research for my own book, I came to love The Long Winter. Readers feel the exhaustion from the cold and hunger in The Long Winter. I'm amazed at how Wilder wove this story of hunger, cold, and isolation...yet the reader isn't bored. I think Wilder told this story as a master.

I'm thrilled to announce a virtual book discussion about The Long Winter.

Author Cindy Wilson and I are hosting this book discussion. Cindy is the author of the incredible book called The Beautiful Snow (Beaver's Pond Press, 2020) which examines pioneers' lives during the long winter of 1880-1881. I highly recommend her book about the pioneers, railroads, and newspapers. It's an in-depth examination of the truth behind The Long Winter.

I am the author of The Laura Ingalls Wilder Companion: A Chapter-by-Chapter Guide (Chicago Review Press, 2020). This children's book (though adults love it, too) explores all nine of the Little House books. It provides brief introductions, chapter-by-chapter story guides, and additional information related to each of the books’ content and history. It also includes 75 activities to help readers live like Laura and Almanzo.

We'll use our knowledge from our research as well as our recent readings of The Long Winter to facilitate a family-friendly group discussion. Please join us and invite a friend!
